Proposal - CarbonTitle: Computing Carbon Emissions for Buildings

Grant/Project Name: Registry of Carbon Emissions for Buildings

Proposer’s contact info (please provide a reliable point of contact for the project): Anil Singh, CTO Carbon Title

Grant Category: [Apps, Tooling/Analytics, Community/Education] Apps, Community/Education

ELI5 Project Summary: [1-2 sentence summary that a non-engineer would understand] Carbon Title is creating the first publicly accessible registry of carbon emissions for buildings globally. The Land registry will be a user facing web2 UI where a user can search for an address and when found will read directly from the associated ceramic stream.

Project Description: [Please be as detailed as possible to ensure that the community understands exactly what you are proposing] The platform is built in three parts, 1) the registry, 2) the web3 platform 3) the administration platform.

  1. The registry is a public facing UI that a user can search for an address or map an area to explore carbon emissions. When a user selects an address, they will be displayed their Carbon Title which will include property data and the calculated carbon emissions for embodied and operational over a 30 year period. Embodied carbon is defined as the carbon expended in the construction of a building. Operational carbon is the ongoing carbon expended for the use of the building. All data displayed on the registry will be read from ceramic in real-time. Ceramic will be the source of all carbon emissions data for buildings.

The vast majority of user do not know how to view nor access data on chain or in ceramic, by providing a user friendly UI we can establish the principles of transparent data and being social responsible for our planet.

  1. The web3 platform will be an authenticated API platform for any system that would like to publish data to buildings in an automated way as well as assign carbon avoidance measure. This system has a set of validations to prevent malicious actors from spamming the system. Each building published/claimed will have an NFT minted with the data residing in ceramic for the registry to use and display.

Ceramic while not complicated is a foreboding endeavor for most web2 shops. By providing a web2 API for web2 developers, we are removing a barrier to entry to make data transparent and public.

  1. The administration platform is a user UI for person or business to claim, updated and offset carbon for the buildings they are stakeholders in.

Most people are keen to make changes to save our planet but lack the proper incentives to do so, by publishing carbon emissions data to a public decentralized database, the inherent social implications of poor corporate citizens can be brought to light guiding them to make better decisions.

Ceramic Ecosystem Value Proposition:

- What is the problem statement this proposal hopes to solve for the Ceramic ecosystem? There is not much documentation on Ceramic and providing a dev friendly web2 API will allow for faster adoption of decentralized, transparent data within the carbon industry.

- How does your proposal offer a value proposition solving the above problem? We will provide a web2 friendly API as well as building carbon data for general public consumption on ceramic therefore expediting adoption.

Additionally we will be running ceramic locally for the ability to write and read. Ceramic will be deployed via Teraform to K8’s on AWS. We will provide this documentation to Ceramic and the ceramic community.

- Why will this solution be a source of growth for the Ceramic ecosystem? There are currently 6M commercial buildings in the USA and 142M residential homes in the USA alone representing multiple trillion dollar industries which will create 300M ceramic streams.
